Dissertação de mestrado em Estudos da Criança (área de especialização em Associativismo e Animação Sócio-Cultural) As Festas Nicolinas, tradição estudantil de Guimarães, é o tema deste trabalho de
investigação. Estas festas constituem uma tradição muito antiga da cidade de Guimarães, e
como tantas outras tradições, não é imóvel, pois ao longo do tempo acompanhou e adaptou-se
às transformações ocorridas na sociedade, mantendo, no entanto, uma das características pela
qual a torna especial: continuam a ser os jovens estudantes a organizar e a animar as Festas
Nicolinas e, concomitantemente, a perpetuar a tradição.
Compreender o que são as Festas Nicolinas a partir das perspetivas dos seus principais
responsáveis, a Comissão de Festas Nicolinas, é o objetivo principal deste estudo.
Para tal, a metodologia utilizada é o estudo de caso de orientação etnográfica que se
insere no paradigma interpretativo, cujo principal objetivo é o de compreender a realidade em
causa.
A observação participante e a análise documental foram os instrumentos privilegiados
nesta investigação. Para a recolha de informação no terreno usei as notas de campo registadas
num diário de bordo, as quais foram posteriormente interpretadas; foram utilizadas, também,
também a máquina de filmar e a máquina fotográfica.
Deste trabalho resultaram algumas conclusões que passo a destacar: As Festas
Nicolinas são as festas dos estudantes de Guimarães e são os estudantes das escolas
secundárias de Guimarães que constituem a Comissão de Festas Nicolinas, responsável máximo
pela organização, realização e perpetuação destas festas. Apesar da Comissão ser o órgão
principal das festas, a Associação dos Antigos Estudantes do Liceu de Guimarães também
fomenta esta perpetuação: participa nos vários festejos, apoia na organização das Festas
Nicolinas e promove várias iniciativas locais tendo em vista a transmissão desta tradição. A
originalidade e a criatividade são algumas das características destas festas, integradas na cultura
popular vimaranense, que ainda hoje sofrem algumas alterações, muitas delas originadas por
sugestões espontâneas. Esta tradição é bastante “acarinhada” pela população vimaranense,
sobretudo por aqueles que um dia vivenciaram, participaram e viveram as Festas Nicolinas onde
encontram na noite do Pinheiro (um dos vários números nicolinos) uma viagem ao passado, ao
convívio, à saudade e à amizade. The theme of my research work is the Nicolinas Festival, a student tradition of
Guimarães. This festival is a very ancient tradition of Guimarães, which, like many others, is not
immutable, having kept up with and adapted to the transformations that took place in society
over time. Nevertheless, it has preserved one of the characteristics that make it so special: young
students are still organizing and bringing life to the Nicolinas Festival while perpetuating the
tradition.
The main goal of this study is to understand the Nicolinas Festival from the point of view
of those who are primarily responsible for it – the Comissão de Festas Nicolinas (the organizers
of the Nicolinas Festival).
For this purpose, the methodology I used was the case study of ethnographic orientation:
it is part of the interpretive paradigm, which aims at understanding the reality in question.
The participant observation and the documentary analysis were my favoured instruments
in this investigation. For collecting information in situ, I used field notes recorded in a logbook,
which I subsequently interpreted, and a camera and a video camera recorder.
A few conclusions could be drawn from this work, which are: the Nicolinas Festival is a
celebration of the students of Guimarães and the Comissão de Festas Nicolinas – ultimately
responsible for the organization, accomplishment and perpetuation of these festivities – is
composed of local secondary school students. Although the Comissão de Festas Nicolinas is the
main body of the festival, the Associação dos Antigos Estudantes do Liceu de Guimarães (Alumni
Association of the Liceu de Guimarães) also favours this perpetuation by participating in the
various festivities, supporting the organization of the festival and promoting several local
initiatives, with regard to the continuity of the tradition. Originality and creativity are some of the
characteristics of this festival, which is integrated into the popular culture of Guimarães. The
festivities still undergo some changes today, many of them caused by spontaneous suggestions.
This tradition is very cherished by the local population, especially by those who have once
experienced, participated and lived the festival and who may find in the Pinheiro night (one of the
several festivities of the festival) a way of reliving the past, the conviviality, the nostalgia and the
friendship.
