Com esta comunicação pretendemos, em primeiro lugar, efectuar uma síntese sobre os conhecimentos existentes relativos às práticas funerárias da Idade do Bronze da orla mais oriental do Noroeste peninsular. Em segundo, e a partir das materialidades conhecidas, ensaiar algumas interpretações sobre o papel social dos mortos, das oferendas e do funeral, nos diferentes contextos cronológico-culturais e espaciais, discutindo, sempre que possível, algumas premissas vulgarmente aceites. Em terceiro e último lugar preconizar o tipo de abordagem que consideramos mais premente no contexto actual da investigação sobre a morte. Concluímos que alguns mortos continuam agentes socialmente activos quer em termos religiosos quer como referentes de memória e de identidade grupal, principalmente durante o Bronze Inicial. A partir do Bronze Médio os cenários de promoção e negociação da identidade parecem deslocar-se para a esfera dos vivos. In this paper we aim to, first, produce a synthesis of the existing body of knowledge concerning Bronze Age funerary practices in the easternmost edge of the northwest Iberia. Second, to propose, according to the materiality known, some interpretations on the social role of the dead, the offerings and the funeral, in different cultural contexts, discussing, whenever possible, some commonly accepted assumptions. Thirdly and lastly we will express some considerations that we consider most significant in the context of the current investigation on death in Prehistory. We conclude that some deaths are still socially active agents or in religious terms or as related to memory and group identity, especially during the Early Bronze Age. From the Middle Bronze scenarios promotion and negotiation of identity seem to move to the realm of the living.
