Com o aparecimento da Escola Nova e com os seus seguidores, um novo marco na área
educativa ocidental surgiu no último quartel do século XIX e no início do século XX,
descrevendo os fenómenos sociais, políticos, científicos e económicos subjacentes à
Escola Nova. O mesmo se tentou relativamente ao panorama nacional português tendo
em conta a emergência da república e a construção de um Homem Novo, alfabetizado e
possuidor de ferramentas que lhe permitissem assumir uma cidadania de pleno direito.
Investigados e categorizados os elementos da pesquisa, procurou-se sobretudo saber se
João de Deus Ramos, o universitário já atento aos problemas da educação de infância, o
jovem colaborador das missões de alfabetização das Escolas Móveis, o criador da
primeira rede portuguesa de jardins-de-infância e, também, da primeira escola
portuguesa para educadoras de infância, o legislador de reformas educativas, o exministro
da instrução, o conferencista sobre temas de educação João de Deus Ramos,
contribuíra ou não para a construção do Homem Novo que a república preconizara e se
as suas convicções pedagógicas se inscreviam ou não no movimento da Escola Nova.
Pretende-se também proceder a uma breve apresentação da história das bibliotecas
móveis portuguesas e, também, a uma reflexão sobre a sua atividade e evolução que
operaram uma revolução no panorama cultural português, contribuindo
simultaneamente para o ressurgimento das novas bibliotecas móveis.
Esta comunicação tem por objetivo avalia o percurso das bibliotecas móveis em
Portugal desde a sua fundação, referindo-se ao seu apogeu nos anos sessenta, com a
rede de bibliotecas itinerantes da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian e, como não poderia
deixar de ser, à realidade dos nossos dias, em que se assiste ao reaparecimento desses
serviços nas novas bibliotecas públicas municipais. Face a tudo isto, a biblioteca móvel
assumiu-se como a porta de acesso local ao conhecimento, ao levar até às populações
recursos de informação e entretenimento aos quais não poderiam aceder com facilidade. With the emergence of the New School and his followers, a new milestone for the
educational system in the western world emerged in the last quarter of the nineteenth
century and early twentieth century, describing social, political, scientific and economic
phenomena underlying the New School. The same is tried for the Portuguese national
scene taking into account the emergence of the republic and the construction of a New
Man, literate and possessed of tools required to take a citizenship by operation of law.
Investigated and categorized the elements of the research, we tried to learn above all is
João de Deus Ramos, the university already aware of the problems of early childhood
education, young collaborator of literacy missions Schools Furniture, the creator of the
first Portuguese network of gardens- for children and also the first Portuguese school for
kindergarten teachers, the legislature of educational reforms, the former minister of
education, lecturer on education topics João de Deus Ramos, contributed or not to build
the New Man that the republic and advocated their pedagogical convictions were part or
not in the New School movement.
We also intend to make a brief presentation of the history of the Portuguese mobile
libraries, and also to reflect on their activity and evolution that operated a revolution in
the Portuguese cultural, while contributing to the resurgence of new mobile libraries.
This communication aims to assess the route of mobile libraries in Portugal since its
foundation, referring to its heyday in the sixties, with the network of mobile libraries
and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, as it should be, the reality of our days, that we
are witnessing the re-emergence of these new services in public libraries. Given all this,
the mobile library was assumed as the local gateway to knowledge, to take up the
population information resources and entertainment to which they could not reach
