Tese de mestrado, Desenho, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Belas Artes, 2013 Character design for animation is currently the result of several decades of technique improvement marked by individual experiences and innovation. The present dissertation has the objective to propose a generalized character drawing methodology based on specialized authors working processes in the fields of: videogames, cinema and animation. This methodology reflects about the authorial diversity in the definition of a normalized drawing process. In parallel, is presented a practical and demonstrative component of the proposed method. It consists in a personal project. Throughout this investigation, the historical context is firstly approached from the beginnings of the 20th century to the current days. The worldwide expression of the american animation panorama was the most contributive to a technical direction towards the individualization of character drawing inside a production context. With this in mind, several authors were referred due to their technical innovation inside character drawing field. With the introduction of the computer, the work process evolved towards an optimization and a development of character drawing inside a production environment. The second part of this study describes the proposed drawing method, where each phase is individually defined and supported by authorial methods, by the clarification of commercial animation production terms and, by the end of each phase, is presented the correspondent practical demonstration
