da Ordem de Cristo, D. João Lourenço. Dada a importância do contexto em que a
milícia foi fundada, não só incluímos alguns apontamentos sobre a criação da milícia de
Cristo no reinado de D. Dinis “herdeira legítima “ da Ordem dos Templários no
território português após a extinção destes em 1312, como abordámos introdutoriamente
a temática das Ordens Militares e as Cruzadas.
Na I Parte do trabalho preocupámo-nos em traçar o percurso percorrido pela
Ordem do Templo em Portugal e o seu desempenho decisivo no apoio aos primeiros
monarcas portugueses na sua política de reconquista cristã. Vimos ainda como D. Dinis
procurou, após o processo que iria conduzir à extinção dos Templários, aproveitar o seu
património e, quiçá, o seu know-how, na criação de uma nova Ordem de Cavalaria – a
Ordem de Cristo. Sucessora da Ordem dos Templários, a Ordem de Cristo viu-se
porém, internamente, envolvida no complexo jogo de poderes que culminaria na guerra
civil entre o rei e o infante. D. Afonso, matéria que será tratada com pormenor na II
Parte do Trabalho.
Na III e última parte do trabalho procedemos então à elaboração da biografia
possível do segundo mestre da Ordem de Cristo. Tentámos coligir dados sobre a sua
vida e obra, com destaque para o papel que desempenhou na Ordem, sobretudo ao nível
da formulação das Ordenações de 1326.
Terminamos com um breve apontamento sobre o reinado de D. Afonso IV no
tocante às linhas gerais de continuidade da política de D. Dinis, permitindo assim a
reafirmação em definitivo da importância da nova milícia de Cristo, na senda dos novos
mundos por descobrir. Abstract: The main subject of my Master Thesis is to draw a small biography of the second
Master of the Order of Christ, D. João Lourenço. As we find it useful, we also added
some hints about the foundation of the Militia of Christ during the kingdom of D. Dinis,
showing the way it turned to be the successor of the Order of the Temple, after its
extinction in 1312, inside Portuguese territory. That’s why we included in the
Introduction some notes concerning the Military Orders and the Crusades.
The first part of the work describes the work of the Order of the Temple in
Portugal and its decisive performance in helping the first Portuguese kings in their
Christian reconquest of the territory. In this first part, we are able to see how D. Dinis,
after the end of the process that would bring the Templars extinction, decided to found a
new Chivalry Order - the Order of Christ - permitting to secure the vast and rich templar
patrimony.
The Order of Christ was established as successor of the Order of the Temple,
and was quickly entangled in the complex game of power that would lead to the civil
war between the king and the infant D. Afonso.
In the third and last part of the work, a little biography of the second Master of
the Order of Christ is presented, highlighting his life and work, especially the role that
he played in the Order, institutionalizing the 1326 Ordinations.
Last but not the least, I tried to summarise the main line of Afonso IV’s realm,
trying to reveal the continuity of D. Dinis’ politics that will definitively reaffirm the
importance of the new Militia of Christ in the path of new worlds to discover.
