a nível das relações amorosas. Inúmeras propostas de definição deste constructo têm
surgido, o que deu origem a um «emaranhamento conceptual» que tem sido difícil de
deslindar. Com este mapa actual como referência, propusemo-nos estudar a relação da
variável dependente intimidade com as variáveis independentes, idade e sexo,
constituindo um estudo exploratório de carácter misto (qualitativo e quantitativo), tendo
como população-alvo jovens adultos portugueses no contexto de uma relação amorosa.
Numa primeira fase, foram realizados três focus group com o objectivo de explorar
significados acerca da intimidade, tendo por finalidade o posterior enriquecimento da
análise dos resultados quantitativos.
Posteriormente, foi aplicado o Personal Assessment of Intimacy in Relationships Scale
(PAIR) a uma amostra recolhida na Grande Lisboa e Porto, de 303 jovens adultos no
contexto de uma relação amorosa, com o objectivo de analisar a influência dos factores
demográficos sexo e idade nesta variável.
Para os dados qualitativos foi construída uma árvore de categorias, ao passo que para a
análise quantitativa recorreu-se ao software SPSS 17.0 for Windows. Registaram-se
diferenças ao nível da variável intimidade em relação à variável sexo, apesar de não
significativas e foram também encontradas diferenças estatisticamente significativas ao
nível da influência da variável sexo na validação pessoal, sendo que as mulheres tendem
a apresentar maiores níveis de intimidade e validação pessoal do que os homens.
O nosso estudo ambiciona gerar pistas de reflexão e estimular futuras investigações com
a população portuguesa na área da intimidade que tenham como objectivo central a
prevenção do divórcio em Portugal. Intimacy is a complex construct that has been studied by many scientists in romantic
relationships. Several propositions of a definition have been suggested, which ended up
in a «conceptual entanglement» which has been difficult to clear up. With this “state of
the art” in mind, we proposed to study the relationship of the independent variable
intimacy with the dependable variable age and sex, accomplished an exploratory mixed
study (qualitative and quantitative), having as target population portuguese young adults
in the context of a romantic relationship.
First, we did three focus group with the purpose of exploring meanings about intimacy,
having by goal the enrichment of the analysis of the quantitative results.
Afterwards, we applied the Personal Assessment of Intimacy in Relationships Scale
(PAIR) to a sample of 303 young adults in the context of a romantic relationship
collected in Lisbon and Porto, with the purpose of analyzing the influence of the
demographic factors sex and age within this variable.
For the qualitative data there was builtd a tree of categories and for the quantitative
analysis we resorted to the software SPSS 17.0 for Windows. It was obtained differences
on the influence of the variable sex on intimacy, despite being non-significant and there
was statistic meaningfully differences on the influence of the variable sex on personal
validation, in which women tend to present larger levels of intimacy and personal
validation than men.
Our study aims to generate tracks of reflection and stimulate future investigations with
the Portuguese population in the area of intimacy that has by central goal the prevention
of divorce in Portugal.
