Tese de mestrado em Educação (Didáctica da Matemática), apresentada à Universidade de Lisboa, através da Faculdade de Ciências, 2008 O presente estudo, que se situa no âmbito da História do Ensino da Matemática, tem como objectivo contribuir para o conhecimento das inovações curriculares e didácticas que ocorreram no ensino da Matemática, ao nível do Ensino Primário, no período compreendido entre o início da década de 1960 e meados da década de 1980 (1960 1987), no contexto do Movimento da Matemática Moderna. Com este objectivo, este estudo centra-se no desenvolvimento do ensino da Matemática no Colégio Vasco da Gama e no papel do seu fundador, João António Nabais, no desenvolvimento do ensino da Matemática no Primário. A investigação foi conduzida com uma metodologia baseada na investigação histórica, tendo como referência a história cultural. As principais fontes do estudo são os documentos escritos pelo próprio Nabais sobre o trabalho desenvolvido no Colégio Vasco da Gama, os depoimentos orais de pessoas que trabalharam com Nabais, os apontamentos de cursos, os materiais didácticos desenvolvidos por Nabais para o ensino da Matemática e os registos fotográficos. Sobre estes documentos, procedeu-se a uma análise do tipo qualitativo. Foram formuladas as seguintes perguntas de investigação: Quando é que surgem as primeiras influências do Movimento da Matemática Moderna no Ensino Primário em Portugal? Que papel teve o pedagogo João António Nabais na introdução das ideias da Matemática Moderna no Ensino Primário em Portugal? Que inovações didácticas e curriculares foram introduzidas por este pedagogo no ensino da Matemática no Colégio Vasco da Gama, que reflictam as ideias da Matemática Moderna? Que papel desempenhou Nabais na formação de professores do Ensino Primário em Portugal, no âmbito do ensino da Matemática? Que referências teóricas são explicitadas no discurso de Nabais, sobre o Ensino da Matemática? No que diz respeito às primeiras influências do Movimento da Matemática Moderna no Ensino Primário, destaca-se o trabalho The aim of the present study, that points out in the scope of the History of Mathematics Education, is to contribute for the knowledge of the curricular and didactics innovations that occurred in the Mathematics Education at Elementary School, in the period between the beginning of the decade of 1960 and middle of the decade of 1980 (1960 - 1987), in the context of the Modern Mathematics. With this aim, this study is centered in the development of the Mathematics Education at the Vasco da Gama School and in the role of its founder, João António Nabais, in the development of the Mathematics Education in the Elementary School. The inquiry was lead with a methodology based on the historical inquiry, having as reference the cultural history. The main sources of the study are the documents written as a result of the work of Nabais himself, at the Vasco da Gama School, the verbal statements of people who had worked with Nabais, the notes of courses with didactics materials developed by Nabais for the Mathematics Education and the photographic registers. On these documents, an analysis of the qualitative type was used. The following questions of inquiry were formulated: When is it that the first influences of the Modern Mathematics appear in Elementary School in Portugal? What was the role that pedagogue João António Nabais had in the introduction of the ideas of the Modern Mathematics in Elementary School in Portugal? What didactics and curricular innovations were introduced by this pedagogue in the Mathematics Education in the Vasco da Gama School, which reflect the ideas of the Modern Mathematics? What was the role played by Nabais in the development of Elementary School teachers in Portugal, in the scope of the Mathematics Education? What were the theoretical references explicit in the speech of Nabais, on the Mathematics Education? In respect to the first influences of the Modern Mathematics in Elementary School, the work carried through by some Private Schools
