Tese de mestrado, Educação artística, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Belas Artes, 2013 Art Therapy is a therapeutic method designed to promote mental health. Its practice incorporates artistic creation by making use of different artistic mediators. Through various forms of expressive arts, people can communicate and explore their feelings. Creative development can lead people to break free from constraints and to acknowledge their own abilities, which translate into higher Self-esteem and well-being. The exercise of creativity enables a distinguished view upon oneself and favors the discovery of alternative solutions for one’s problems. The goal is personal growth, contact with the sensible world and emotional development. Within the art therapy process, the creative experience enriches the artistic imagination and contributes to Self- awareness, booster of internal content development and personal transformation. The art mediators are the means employed for the purpose of creation, expression and communication in the art therapeutic setting. They are comprised by Self-expression in its multiple ways, such as corporal, dramatic, literary, ludic, musical and visual. From them derive the technical artistic resources, which are the proposals and the materials for creation. It is essential in art therapy to evaluate the therapeutic potential of each resource, matching the needs of the individuals. When they are applied, it’s important to consider their particular characteristics: creative, expressive and symbolic. The research lead us to the conclusion that symbolic and creative potentials of the technical artistic resources are activated in the creative process developed in Art Therapy. We understand that this activation uses the symbolism associated with each material and which is significant by the expressive and creative needs of the subject. Every technical artistic feature facilitates artistic expression of some kinds of affections, feelings and emotions, as well as the development of their creativity
