Mestrado em Psicologia Socal e das Organizações Muitos dos estudos realizados acerca de bullying são centrados nos papéis mais salientes tais como a vítima/s e o agressor/s, ignorando largamente o papel representado pela grande maioria presente nestas situações: o bystander. Relativamente a este papel, sobretudo no que respeita ao bystander defensor, há que compreender como pode este ser influenciado pela empatia, já que esta assume segundo a literatura um papel determinante no comportamento de ajuda dos pares. O presente estudo procurou verificar se os comportamentos de ajuda dependem da empatia. Um total de 357 alunos (do 5º ao 11º ano) participaram no estudo. Verificou-se através das análises realizadas a influência da empatia na adopção deste tipo de comportamentos. Por outro lado, períodos elevados de vitimização conduziram a menores níveis de empatia. A idade dos indivíduos não se revelou relevante para a ajuda dos pares. Os resultados são finalmente discutidos assim como as limitações do estudo sendo feitas algumas sugestões para estudos futuros. Most of the studies about bullying focus only the most salient roles such as the victim/s and aggressor/s, forgetting about those who are the majority of the time present during these situations: the bystander. Regarding to this specific role, especially regarding to the defending bystander, is important to understand how he may be influenced by empathy, since he assumes, according to the literature, an important role in helping peers. The present study`s main concern was to verify if defending behaviors depended on empathy. A 357 pupil school sample was used (from 5th to 11th grades) in the study. It was verified according to the analysis, that empathy seems to influence pro-social and defending behaviors. On the other side, long victimization periods tend to generate decreased empathy levels. Participant`s age was not relevant in helping peers in bullying situations. Results are discussed as well as limitations regarding the study. A few suggestions are made for studies that may follow.
