Mestrado em Antropologia: Património e Identidades Pinhal Novo é uma vila que, estando situada na margem sul da Área Metropolitana de Lisboa, aposta na implementação de estratégias sociais e económicas com o objectivo de ocupar um lugar de destaque face às restantes freguesias do concelho de Palmela e aos concelhos vizinhos. A evocação da história, tradições e memórias são as ferramentas simbólicas que o território utiliza para reivindicar uma posição e sublinhar o seu desenvolvimento enquanto centro urbano. O apelativo caramelo, cuja origem se confunde com a própria origem do lugar, traduzia inicialmente os trabalhadores rurais da Beira Litoral que, em séculos anteriores, para ali vieram ganhar sustento. Na década de 80 do século passado, o termo sofreu um processo de transfiguração passando a justificar a existência de uma consciência colectiva do território, actuando e exibindo-se publicamente. O apelativo tem vindo a constituir-se como a zona imaginada da história do lugar e da identidade territorial, autenticado e postulado pela eficácia do aparato simbólico que o produz. E este campo simbólico é domínio de vários protagonistas que concorrem para a fabricação e revitalização cultural. Esta tese pretende apresentar a forma como o território, a partir do apelativo caramelo, se posiciona como centro urbano, num processo de Construção e Representação de Si. Situated in the south shore of Lisbon’s Metropolitan Area (AML), the town of Pinhal Novo makes a clear bet in the development and implementation of social and economical strategies, with the purpose of occupying a leading place, face to the remaining clienteles of Palmela’s municipality and, also, face to the neighbouring municipalities. History, traditions and memories are the symbolic tools used by the territory to demand a position and to bring out its development as an urban centre. The “caramelo” appeal, whose origins are deeply related with the origin of the town, was an expression initially used to describe the rural workers of the Beira Litoral region who, in previous centuries, had travelled there, searching for work and a way of living. In the 80’s of the last century, the term suffered a transfiguration process, justifying the existence of a territorial collective conscience, with public activity and notoriety. This appeal has become the imaginary zone of the place’s history and territorial identity… an identity authenticated by the effectiveness of the symbolic apparatus which produces it. And this symbolic field is the domain of characters concurring for the cultural creation and revitalization. This thesis intends to present the way as the territory, from the “caramelo” appeal, positions itself as an urban centre, in a process of self Construction and Representation.
