Description
The hospitalization of acute patients can precipitate a worsening of emotional state, since the patient may experience an altered reality. Interpretation of the experience as either boring or diminishing can result in aggressive behaviors towards those intimately involved in the process, the health professionals Quasi-experimental study: Universitary Hospital; 2 acute units (male and female) February 2004 and ended in February 2005; Two groups: experimental and control group Inclusion criteria: age between 18 and 65 years old; moderate or high risk of violence, obtained by a score of 4 or higher in the assessment instrument of VIOLENCE and AGRESSIVITY ASSESSMENT (Homalia, 2001); predicted hospitalisation of three weeks or longer Exclusion criteria: phobia and/or allergy to dogs; physical perturbations or under treatment that compromise the Immunitary system – showing un availableness to participate; be included in the previous phase of the study Of the 52 evaluated cases: 26 belong to the experimental group and 26 to the control group The program AAA (dog) was efficient in the prevention of violence in psychiatric context Positive influence in frequencies, nature and severity of aggressive behaviours; and these patients were not submitted to psychofarmacological program The program AAA (dog) was not efficient in Psychiatric symptom and Anger experience and expression The results contained within this report strongly suggest that the Program AAA (dog) is efficient. AAA in promotion of social-emotional well-being, can be considered a complementary intervention technique for the prevention of aggressive behaviors in the psychiatric context. Even though a climate of well being can be created within the sessions, it must be noted that no evidence has been obtained for any interpersonal improvement between the pair The results contained within this report strongly suggest that the Program AAA (dog) is efficient.
