Descrição
Introduction: The lifestyle is one of the predominant factors for maintaining both quality of life and people's health, revealing that this triad (lifestyle, quality of life and health) is closely associated with welfare. Self-esteem has been investigated as an important construct in the constellation of health behaviors, as a way to feel self-worth, often associated with various adaptive behaviors and lifestyles. Objectives: To relate the lifestyle with the self-esteem of students in higher education in the central region of Portugal. Material and Methods: A descriptive cross-correlation to a non-probabilistic sample of higher education students in the central region of Portugal: students who responded to the questionnaire were sent the list of students enrolled in 12 higher education institutions. We constructed an online questionnaire containing the socio demographic characterization; Self-esteem scale validated for the Portuguese population by Santos and Maia (2003) and the questionnaire "Fantastic Lifestyle" by Silva, Brito and Amado (2011), which includes 10 lifestyle domains. Results: The participants were 4315 students in higher education in the central region of Portugal: in which 1266 (29.3%) were male and 3049 (70.7%) female. Regarding lifestyle, the average was (85.97 ± 12.83) for a minimum score of 0 and maximum of 120. Self-esteem had a mean (30.09 ± 5.06) score for a minimum of 10 and maximum of 40. In correlations made between the two variables, self-esteem and domains of lifestyle: correlations were found positive and significant (p=0,000) in the fields (F - Family and Friends, A - Physical activity / Associations, N - Nutrition; A - Alcohol and Other Drugs, S - Sleep / Stress, T - Work / personality type; I - Introspection; C - Health and sexual behaviors; O - Other Behaviors). Conclusion: These results show that low self-esteem can be a facilitating factor of less healthy behaviors in students. Hence the importance of developing strategies signaling vulnerable students and create structures for monitoring, support and training in higher education institutions.
