Descrição
ABSTRACT Objective: (1) To determine student population recent weight history; (2) To determine student population prevailing weight levels; (3) To determine the weight/family features relation. Methodology: We implemented a quantitative correlational cross-sectional non-experimental study on 1,388 high-school/college students from Portugal (Midland); they were 14 to 25 year-old boys and girls. All of them answered an anonymous questionnaire. It was a socio-family-and-household survey collecting data on recent weight history, family satisfaction, the Inventory for Assessing Memories of Parental Behaviour (IAMPB), and the Family Expressiveness Questionnaire (FEQ). Outcome 4.3% (61) of the respondents are excessively thin; 26.7% (375) of the respondents are thin; 57.3% (804) of the respondents are normally weight; 9.6% (135) of the respondents are obese (Type-1 obesity); and 1.8% (25) of the respondents are obese (Type-2 obesity). 78 out of 432 deficit weight students, and 65 out of 160 obese students, both control their own weight by physical exercising and dieting, for example. However, 61 obese respondents put on more than 8 lb (4kg) over last year. 8.7% (122) of the respondents indulge in food in a compulsive way. The majority of the obese students' parents are married. The cohesion indexes of the obese student's family are lower than the cohesion indexes of the average weight student's family. The same happens in what adaptability is concerned. On average, the obese student considers, contrary to the average weight student, both his/her childhood and adolescence a period of lower emotional support, higher rejection, and lower mother/father's overprotection
