RESUMO A morte é uma característica essencial do homem; como todos os seres vivos também morre, mas é único que tem consciência da inevitabilidade da morte e de uma vida finita no tempo. Assim, a morte do homem não se limita a um derradeiro acontecimento, mas compreende toda a vida, condicionando-a - vida e morte identificam-se. O drama da morte, que advém do sentimento de perca e de separação eterna, agudiza-se na criança. A família e os profissionais de saúde têm maior dificuldade em aceitar e lidar com a morte no início da vida, o que se repercute no acompanhamento facilitado à criança em fase terminal. Fica um contributo para a humanização da fase terminal da vida, em particular da criança. O direito à vida cumpre-se, também, no direito a uma morte digna e humana, que mitigue o sofrimento e promova a qualidade de vida do doente. ABSTRACT Death is essential characteristic of man; like all other living creatures he also dies, but man is the only living being that has knowledge of the inevitability of death after a finite period of time. Thus the death of a human beings is not limited to "a last event", it comprehends the whole of the lifetime, while conditioning it - life and death may be identified in each other. The drama of death, which comes from the feelings of loss and eternal sepration, is more acute in the child. Family and heath professionals have great difficulty ain accepting and dealing with death at the beginning of life; this has repercussions when supporting and helping the terminally ill child. A contribution is made for greater humanization in the terminal phase of the child's life. The right to life is also fulfilled in the right to a dignified and humane death that alleviates suffering and improves the quality of life of the patient.
