Descrição
North European Humanism in the Rhetoric of the Iberian Peninsula in the 16th century. The dissemination of Humanist rhetoric from Northern Europe was one of the factors which kindled a dispute in the Iberian space between the Ancients and Moderns. The knowledge of the novelties proposed by the masters from the Rhine-Flemish area, possible through the works of Melanchthon, was on the rise given the circulation of scholarly editions of the manuals by Trebizonda, Vaseu and Ringelberg; furthermore, the reception of the most conspicuous ideas of Petrus Ramus (Pierre de la Ramèe) would also undoubtedly contribute to the evolution of rhetorical studies and a revival in the teaching of dialectics. This paper, apart from exploring the reception of neoteric doctrines, the rejection of novelties or the questioning of their usefulness, also seeks to document, particularly in Jesuit pedagogy and the De Eloquentia by Tomé Correia, the consolidation of an aesthetic orthodoxy rooted in loyalty to the Greek-Latin classics.
