A construção da modernidade: Marques da Silva e o Porto do século XX

The current paper intends to present some hypotheses for the reading of the work of Marques da Silva (1869- 1947), based on the projects of the Oporto Railway Station S. Bento (1896-1911) and the Building Block Conde de Vizela (1922-1923). It aims to give up special attention not only to the buildings themselves, but also to the relationships between them and with the entire work in which they operate as part of the cultural milieu in which they occurred. From this observation of buildings the (re)reading of the work of Marques da Silva is studied as a cosmopolitan and international intervention that took place in Porto, which at the beginning of the century must be treated as a modern work. This is an essential reading as part of the architectures of the opening of the twentieth century, because it is currently known, more deeply than it was conventionally accepted, that they will shape the different productions of twentieth century Portuguese architecture. These buildings will shape the very idea of modern. Pretende-se apresentar algumas hipóteses para a leitura da obra de Marques da Silva (1869-1947), focadas a partir dos projetos, no Porto, da Estação Ferroviária de S. Bento (1896-1911) e do Edifício Quarteirão Conde de Vizela (1922-1923). Pretende dar-se especial atenção não só aos edifícios em si, mas também às relações entre eles e deles com a globalidade da obra onde se inserem, como parte do ambiente cultural onde se produziram. A partir desta observação dos edifícios abre-se a (re)leitura da obra de Marques da Silva como uma intervenção cosmopolita e internacional realizada no Porto que, no início do século XX, deve ser atendida como uma obra moderna. Trata-se de uma leitura fundamental, no quadro das arquiteturas da abertura do século XX, porque hoje sabemos que irão moldar, mais profundamente do que foi convencionalmente aceite, as diferentes produções arquitetónicas do século XX português; irão moldar a própria ideia de moderno.
