Description
OBJECTIVES: The taurodontism is a dental anomaly that can occur alone or as a sign of cranio-facial syndromes (Wright et al., 2008). Of these, Trico-dento-osseous syndrome is one of the more related (Wright et al., 2008). Patients with these and other syndromes are an increasingly challenge for the dental medicine of our days. The medical teams should establish a treatment plan in a multidisciplinary way and adapted to periods of development for these patients (De Coster et al., 2007, Hu et al., 2007; Wright et al., 2008). The objective of this work is to bring up a clinical case of an adult Caucasian male, 22 years old, showing Tricho-dento-osseous phenotype present in the Orofacial Genetics Consulting of the Dental Medicine School - University of Porto (FMDUP). Additionally the authors pretend also draw attention to the dental community for diagnosis and multidisciplinary early intervention in similar cases. MATERIALS AND MEYHODS: The patient was evaluated and the treatment plan was established by Orofacial Genetics, Orthodontics and Removable Prosthesis Departments of FMDUP. Additionally a literature search on Pubmed, using the keywords "phenotype tricho-dento-osseous syndrome", was done, and 6 articles, published in the last 10 years and written in English, French or Spanish, were included. RESULTS: The patient DRLA presented psychomotor retardation, skeletal abnormalities (bone condensation), nails dysplasia, anterior open bite, absence of posterior oclusion, generalized taurodontism and discrete condensation of cranial bones. It was introduced a provisional treatment plan with a partial denture in the mandibula and esthetic resin restorations in antero-superior sector. CONCLUSIONS: Aware that orthodontic treatment should be the first indication of choice of treatment, the authors present an intermediate stage of the treatment plan, which aimed primarily to restore function and to motivate the patient for subsequent stages of multidisciplinary treatment.
