This article is part of the work undertaken within the Ph.D. program in Geography. It basically establish guidelines for initial research, grounds bibliography, design and conception of the database that will serve as a starting point for an extensive work in the area of Geomorphologic Mapping. The Geomorphologic Mapping, being an excellent way of knowledge transmission about the physical landscape, in concerns to its genesis and evolution, has proven its ability to be part of a new, dynamic and inclusive methodology, enabling their conception to practical application on natural hazards and land use planning. However, we found a huge variety of map types, both in terms of their conceptual approach, and in terms of simbology, which makes them difficult to read and leads to more academic uses. Proper basis coding allows a standardization of symbolic representation, more appropriate to this kind of representations. This problem worsens because there is no institutionalization of such maps. It is in this complex context that we intend to develop our research project.
