In this study,thetensilestrengthofsingle-lapjoints(SLJs)betweensimilarand
dissimilar adherendsbondedwithanacrylicadhesivewasevaluatedexperimen-
tally andnumerically.Theadherendmaterialsincludedpolyethylene(PE),poly-
propylene (PP),carbon-epoxy(CFRP),andglass-polyester(GFRP)composites.
The followingadherendcombinationsweretested:PE=PE, PE=PP, PE=CFRP,
PE=GFRP, PP=PP, CFRP=CFRP, andGFRP=GFRP. Oneoftheobjectivesofthis
work wastoassesstheinfluenceoftheadherendsstiffnessonthestrengthofthe
joints sinceitsignificantlyaffectsthepeelstressesmagnitudeintheadhesive
layer. Theexperimentalresultswerealsousedtovalidateanewmixed-modecohe-
sive damagemodeldevelopedtosimulatetheadhesivelayer.Thus,theexperimen-
tal resultswerecomparedwithnumericalsimulationsperformedinABAQUS1,
including adevelopedmixed-mode(IþII) cohesivedamagemodel,basedonthe
indirect useoffracturemechanicsandimplementedwithininterfacefinite
elements. Thecohesivelawspresentatrapezoidalshapewithanincreasingstress
plateau, toreproducethebehaviouroftheductileadhesiveused.Agoodagreement
was foundbetweentheexperimentalandnumericalresults.
