A studyofthemechanicalbehaviouroflaminatedcompositeadhesivejointsispresentedinthispaper. The studyconsistsofbothnumericalsimulationsandexperimentaltests.Itconcentratesonsinglelap-shear joints madeofcarbon–epoxylaminatedcompositesandanepoxyadhesive.Themainobjectiveistoverify the adequacyofcohesivedamagemodelsforthestrengthpredictionofbondedjoints.Thesemodelsare attractiveinmodellingfractureproblemssincetheydonotrequirethedefinitionofaninitialcrackandthey model damagepropagationwithoutanyuserintervention.Amixed-modecohesivedamagemodelisusedto simulate damageonsetandgrowthintheadhesivelayer.Themodelisanextensionofpuremode(IandII) trapezoidal cohesivedamagemodels.Thetrapezoidalshapeintheconstitutivelawismorevalidwhen ductile adhesivesareused.Themixed-modemodelrequiresacompletecharacterizationofthecohesive parameters inpuremodes,determinedwithaninversemethod.Tensiletestsareperformedforjointswith differentoverlaplengths.Itisshownthatthenumericalsimulationsrepresentwithareasonableaccuracy the mechanicalbehaviourofthejointstested.
