In this work we try to study the historical transformations that the use of drugs had during times. We will speak of the process of commerce and discovery of many chemical substances. Then we will listen to the works of several writers that describe their experiences with some substances. At last, we reference the appearing of communities of drug addicts with high levels of psycho-social deterioration that exemplify the experience with drugs as a tragic one. All this work will help us to understand, in his complexity, the experience of drug use as a discovery and alienation of the self. Neste texto, passamos em revista as transformações históricas que o uso de substâncias com efeitos psicotrópicos sofreu ao longo dos tempos. Para isso, chamamos a atenção para um processo de mercantilização e manuseamento químico das substâncias que decorreu nos séculos XVIII e XIX. De seguida, debruçamo-nos sobre as reflexões que diversos escritores experimentadores produziram e que ajudaram a balizar os tipos de experiência de consumo. Por último, fazemos notícia da emergência de comunidades de consumidores com altos índices de deterioração que inauguraram uma experiência trágica das drogas. Tudo isto, para podermos compreender, na sua verdadeira complexidade, a experiência do uso de drogas como descoberta e alienação de si. O dilema antropológico com o qual o actual utilizador de drogas tem que lidar.
