Torna-se cada vez mais evidente e urgente uma consciência global da necessidade de proteger o ambiente e minimizar o impacto negativo da actividade humana. A arquitectura tem um papel preponderante neste desafio uma vez que a construção, a utilização e demolição de edifícios envolvem um elevado uso de materiais, energia e produção de resíduos. O objetivo principal deste estudo é analisar não só a questão da sustentabilidade em edifícios, mas também comparar duas formas distintas de Arquitectura Sustentável, a High-tech e Low-tech, resultantes de dois diferentes contextos históricos, referindo não só as suas características formais, mas também a sua forma de pensar e filosofia. Através desta comparação, pretende-se perceber como se pode projectar de forma sustentável, como se caracterizam na prática os conceitos e mecanismos das diferentes abordagens, de forma a melhor compreender os seus resultados.The global awareness of the necessity to protect the environment and minimize the negative effects of human activities to the Planet is growing ever more urgent and obvious. Since building, using and demolishing buildings involves high energy and material consumption and waste production, architecture has a major role in facing this challenge before us. This paper focuses on analyzing not only the issue of sustainability in buildings, but also on the comparison between two distinct styles of sustainable architecture, the high-tech and low-tech. The two are a result of different historic contexts, not only in respect to their formal characteristics, but also the underlying philosophy and reasoning. Through this comparison one can try to understand how to design in a sustainable way and also how are the concepts and mechanisms of these different approaches practically defined in a way that will allow us a better understanding of its results.
