Monografia apresentada à Universidade Fernando Pessoa para obtenção do grau Licenciado em Medicina Dentária Desde muito cedo da sua existência, o homem busca incessantemente a perfeição e o belo em todas as suas obras e criações. Esta cultura pela perfeição e pelo naturalmente belo remonta à Grécia antiga (492 A.C.) e tem assumido crescente atenção e preocupação pelo ser humano até aos dias de hoje. O rosto humano é altamente surpreendente e nada pode competir com ele em termos de comunicação. Para alguns autores, o terço inferior da face é o responsável pelo máximo impacto na percepção da estética facial. Segundo Claude Rufenacht: “um sorriso agradável pode produzir uma aura que amplia a beleza da face, fazendo parte das qualidades e virtudes da personalidade humana”. Não existe, entre as expressões humanas, algo mais significativo que um sorriso sincero. Assim, o médico dentista que pretenda realizar trabalhos de reabilitação estética vê a sua responsabilidade muito acrescida pelo impacto que estes podem ter no sorriso, na face e no intelecto do indivíduo. Esta grande responsabilidade levou ao estudo e desenvolvimento de fundamentos estéticos de forma a tornar os tratamentos de estética oral mais previsíveis. Por vezes, alguns pacientes apresentam situações estéticas bastante desfavoráveis e de difícil correcção. Felizmente, o olho humano é susceptível a enganos, pelo que a utilização de efeitos de ilusão de óptica pode ser muito útil para a resolução de problemas estéticos complexos. Assim, a compreensão dos fenómenos de percepção visual e de ilusões de óptica assume grande importância para o médico dentista que pretenda realizar um trabalho de estética por excelência. From the very early of its existence, the man looks for the perfection and the beautiful unceasingly in all their works and creations. This culture of perfection and naturally beautiful remounts to ancient Greece (492 B.C.) and it has been given more attention and concern from the human being until this day. The human face is highly surprising and nothing can compete with him in communication terms. For some authors, the lower face (inferior third of the face) is the responsible for the maximum impact in the perception of the facial aesthetics. According to Claude Rufenacht: “a pleasant smile can produce a breeze that enlarges the beauty of the face, making part of the qualities and virtues of the human personality”. It doesn't exist, among the human expressions, something more significant than a sincere smile. Thus, the dentist who intends to carry out rehabilitation aesthetics sees its increased responsibility by the impact that these can have in the smile, in the face and in the individual's intellect. This great responsibility led to the study and development of aesthetic grounds in order to make the more predicable treatments of oral aesthetics. Occasionally, some patients have very poor aesthetic situations and of difficult correction. Fortunately, the human eye is susceptive to mistakes, so the use of optical illusion effects can be very useful for the resolution of complex aesthetic problems. Like this, the understanding of the phenomenon of visual perception and optical illusions are of great importance for the dentist who intends to accomplish an aesthetics work.
